Treatment options

A challenge in providing appropriate care for women with breast cancer is the rapid expansion of new treatments. The rate at which information emerges about new treatments presents a challenge for keeping clinical practice guidelines and consumer information up to date. There is a need for current evidence-based information about new treatments to support the information needs of women with breast cancer, clinicians, media and policy-makers.

In 2003 the National Breast Cancer Centre* commissioned two systematic reviews of new treatments for breast cancer:

  • Use of luteinising hormone-releasing hormone agonists for adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer

  • Use of taxanes for adjuvant and neo-adjuvant treatment of early and locally advanced breast cancer

* In February 2008, National Breast Cancer Centre (NBCC) changed its name to National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre (NBOCC).
