NBOCC General Practitioner Education Series has been developed to support GPs in investigating symptoms that may be due to breast or ovarian cancer and in caring for patients with breast or ovarian cancer. The resource comprises a series of four evidence-based topic-specific workshop modules for presentation by GPs for implementation by GPs through the Divisions of General Practice.

Module 1 - Investigating a new breast symptom

The investigation of a new breast symptom: a guide for general practitioners has been designed to maximise the effectiveness of investigation of patients who present to their GP with new breast symptoms.

This workshop module is designed to support the implementation of the guide and to support GPs in the translation of evidence into clinical practice.
Workshop learning outcomes:

  • outline the incidence of breast cancer in Australia
  • understand the impact of early detection on survival
  • understand and be able to implement the triple-test approach to diagnosis of a new breast symptom
  • outline the management of benign breast lesions.

Module 2 – Assessing symptoms that may be ovarian cancer

Assessment of symptoms that may be ovarian cancer: a guide for GPs details the recommended steps to be taken in investigating women who present with symptoms that may be ovarian cancer.

Advice about familial aspects of breast cancer and epithelial ovarian cancer: a guide for health professionals aims to assist GPs discuss familial risk of ovarian cancer with asymptomatic women concerned about their family history.

This workshop module aims to provide GPs with an understanding of best practice relating to the assessment of symptoms that may be ovarian cancer.

Workshop learning outcomes:

  • outline the incidence of ovarian cancer in Australia
  • describe the presenting symptoms that may indicate ovarian cancer
  • discuss the role of the general practitioner in the diagnosis, referral and management of women with symptoms that may be ovarian cancer or who are at increased risk due to familial aspects.

Module 3 – Younger women and breast cancer

This workshop module is designed to assist GPs in supporting younger women with breast cancer through raising awareness of particular issues they face. Providing support and information to GPs about best practice in relation to younger women with breast cancer.

Workshop learning outcomes:

  • understand the particular issues of relevance to younger women with breast cancer
  • understand how to assess a younger woman's risk of developing breast cancer according to her family history
  • be able to discuss the appropriate surveillance of a younger woman at high risk
  • understand the physical and psychosocial issues confronting younger women following a diagnosis of breast cancer
  • understand the potential impact of the treatment of breast cancer on younger women.

Module 4 – Communication skills training for GPs

This workshop module is designed to support general practitioners in caring for patients with cancer.

The workshop aims to assist general practitioners in:

  • breaking bad news
  • discussing prognosis
  • eliciting and responding to emotional cues.
