Better communication, better care

General interactional skills

Effective communication between clinicians and their patients improves patient understanding and satisfaction with treatment and can assist patients in adjusting to a diagnosis of cancer.

There are a number of communication skills that are relevant to any clinical situation and should be considered in any consultation with patients with cancer. These include:

  • identifying the patient's agenda
  • negotiating an agenda
  • building rapport
  • explanation and planning.

For an overview of general interactional skills the NBCC* has prepared a document:
General interactional skills pdf (82kb)

* In February 2008, National Breast Cancer Centre (NBCC) changed its name to National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre (NBOCC).
